We are a small, grass-roots-based NGO supporting approximately 80 children, all of whom come from the most marginalized groups in Bhaktapur’s society. The majority of our children come from three communities: the Dyola community, who are of the lowest caste in the Newari caste system; and low-caste Indian children whose families migrated to Nepal for work. For those familiar with the caste system in South Asia, these children and their families are often deemed “untouchable.” This means they exist on the edge of society, their parents often cannot work, leading to extremely high rates of child labor.
