Happy Kids Center is a community-based organization rooted in Bhaktapur, Nepal, working alongside children and families facing some of the most difficult circumstances.
We are a safe, consistent space where children can come every day to learn, eat, play, and simply be children. Our work is built on the understanding that no single solution is enough. Education, health, protection, and emotional support are all deeply connected.
We take a holistic approach because we have seen what happens when one piece is missing. A child who is hungry cannot focus in school. A child who feels unsafe cannot learn. A child burdened by work or early marriage cannot access opportunity. Everything we do is designed to support the whole child, not just one part of their life.
When we first opened our doors, nearly 60% of the children we served were not in school, spending their days begging and working in the street. All girls were married by the age of 15, and 70% of the children were severely or very severely underweight.
Happy Kids Center began with a simple but difficult reality. In the years following the 2015 earthquake, it was impossible to ignore the number of children spending their days on the streets of Bhaktapur. Many were begging, collecting recyclables, or working long hours instead of going to school.
We met children who were bright, playful, and full of potential, yet carrying responsibilities no child should have to bear. Many spent their days approaching tourists, asking for spare change or rice, and collecting plastic and recyclables to sell. They were full of energy and joy, but their lives were defined by survival.
What started as a small effort to create a safe place for a few children quickly became something more. We began by offering a consistent space where children could come during the day, share meals, and experience a sense of stability.
But it became clear that children in this community needed more support if they were going to break the cycle of poverty that had long limited them.
One moment brought this into focus. We met a family of eight sisters. One by one, they had been pulled out of school. Not because they lacked interest or ability, but because of a single event. After one sister was married at a young age, the others were expected to follow the same path. Education was no longer seen as necessary for them.
That moment revealed something deeper. The barriers children faced were not just financial. They were social and cultural, rooted in expectations that limited what children, especially girls, were allowed to become. It became clear that simply helping a child enroll in school would not be enough.
We continued to provide a consistent, safe space where children could come each day. From there, we began supporting school enrollment while also addressing the barriers that made it difficult to stay. Uniforms, exam fees, food insecurity, and the loss of a child’s contribution at home all played a role.
As more children joined, other needs became impossible to ignore. Many were arriving hungry. Some were severely underweight. Without consistent meals and health support, even those who were in school struggled to succeed. This led to daily school lunches, after-school snacks, and individualized nutrition support.
At the same time, we worked closely with girls and their families to prevent early marriage and ensure they could remain in school and make choices about their futures.
Each part of our work grew from what we witnessed. Nothing was designed in isolation. Every program exists because it was needed.
Today, the children we once met outside of school are in classrooms, supported not just academically, but as whole individuals. Their lives, and their futures, continue to shape everything we do.

Our organization truly believes that by working together, we can save more lives than ever before.
