Every year, young girls face the heartbreaking reality of forced early marriages, cutting short their childhood, education, and prospects for a better life. This perpetuates the cycle of poverty that many families in our community endure. To address this issue, we collaborated with mothers who understand the struggles firsthand, realizing that child marriage is driven by financial necessity rather than purely cultural tradition. This led to the creation of our Kanya String of Hope handmade jewelry line.
Crafted by girls aged 12 to 18 who are at risk of child marriage, each bracelet you purchase becomes an investment in their future and a powerful support against this harmful practice. These bracelets provide them with a means to earn a living and gain financial independence.
When you buy a Kanya String of Hope bracelet, 50% of the proceeds directly contribute to the girls’ salaries. This income helps cover school fees and support their families’ basic needs. The remaining 50% is placed into a trust fund for the girl who made the bracelet. Upon reaching 18 years old, she can access the fund if she remains unmarried and continues her education. This serves as an incentive for prioritizing education over early marriage.
In 2018, Happy Kids Center took a significant step in confronting the pervasive issue of child marriage within our community by launching the Kanya String of Hope program. Child marriage remains alarmingly prevalent in South Asia, with this region having the highest rates worldwide. Within our community, this tradition is deeply ingrained, affecting the futures of countless young girls. Shockingly, approximately 45% of girls in this part of the world are married before they reach the age of 18, marking the premature end of their childhood, education, family ties, and often leading to a lifetime of poverty and abuse.
Our organization truly believes that by working together, we can save more lives than ever before.
