Education at HKC

Our Education Philosophy

At Happy Kids Center, education starts with understanding the reality of a child’s life.

While education in Nepal is technically free, the true cost of going to school remains out of reach for many families. Between uniforms, supplies, exam fees, and the loss of income a child might otherwise bring home, many children are unable to attend consistently, or at all.

We work to remove these barriers by creating flexible pathways into education and supporting children as they continue their learning.

Dyola School: A Flexible Entry Point

Our work is rooted in our partnership with The Dyola School, where Happy Kids Center is based. Together, we have co-created a flexible entry point into education for children who would otherwise be excluded.

At Dyola School, children are welcomed as they are. Many have never attended school before or have fallen behind due to child labor or family circumstances. Others come from migrant families and cannot attend school consistently.

Rather than turning children away, the school is designed to meet them where they are, creating a stable and supportive environment where children can begin or return to learning.

What makes it unique:
  • Children can join at different learning levels. A 12-year-old who has never attended school due to child labor can begin at Grade 1, without stigma or exclusion.

  • Attendance is flexible to reflect family realities, especially for children of migrant workers who cannot follow a consistent school schedule.

  • Younger children are welcomed so older siblings can attend school, reducing childcare responsibilities that often lead to absenteeism or dropout.

  • School lunches, after-school snacks, and basic needs are supported, removing the financial barriers that prevent many children from attending.

Education Sponsorship

For children who are ready to participate in a more structured school environment, Happy Kids Center provides long-term support through our sponsorship program, EducateHKC.

Sponsorship allows children to follow a consistent path through the formal education system by covering essential costs such as school fees, supplies, uniforms, and other needs that would otherwise prevent attendance.

Children enter sponsorship through two primary pathways. Some are supported from an early age and attend school consistently from the beginning of their education. Others transition into sponsorship after building foundational skills at Dyola School, continuing their education in local secondary schools.

In some cases, additional financial support is provided to families where the risk of child labor or early marriage is highest. This helps ensure that children are able to remain in school, even when there is pressure to contribute to household income.

Across all pathways, the goal is the same: to provide a stable, long-term route through education that allows each child to reach their full potential.
